Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can affect children, teenagers, and adults. The symptoms of ADHD can affect your everyday life, including relationships, your ability to perform at work, and self esteem.

While not much is known about why people develop ADHD and why it seems to run in families, every year more and more about the condition is discovered.

As research and knowledge on the condition increases, more options have become available to people who need help with ADHD. Here at Manor Clinic, we offer an integrated approach to treatment which can include medical, psychological and coaching techniques.

SYMPTOMS OF ADHD IN ADULTS

While the actual symptoms that appear will vary from person to person, here is a short look at some of the basic indicators that someone may have a problem with ADHD.

  • Difficulty paying attention to details

  • Does not or appears not to pay attention when spoken to

  • Difficulty with organization

  • Frequently loses things

  • Very forgetful in day to day activities

Hyperactivity symptoms:

TREATMENT FOR ADHD IN ADULTS

When it comes to treating ADHD, it is crucial that therapy and coaching are used in addition to medication if it is needed. With guided therapy, most people can learn to control their ADHD symptoms before they get out of hand and cause problems in their life. A combination of medication and behaviour therapy may be prescribed.

For a problem like ADHD, it is important to also see if there are other issues that are complicating or exacerbating the ADHD symptoms – this is known as co-morbid conditions.

SYMPTOMS OF ADHD IN CHILDREN

Difficulties are often present by pre-school age and may be similar to the symptoms experienced by adults, listed above.

In addition, children may display developmentally inappropriate symptoms (i.e. behaviours not seen in most children of the same age). These behaviours may be affecting the child’s learning and relationships at school and home. For example:

Inattention:

  • Unable to concentrate on schoolwork or homework

  • Easily distracted in school or when doing routine tasks like getting dressed

  • Trouble taking direction and following through on it

Hyperactivity:

  • Talking excessively, or moving around in class without permission

  • Especially loud whilst playing, or has trouble participating in quiet leisure activities

Impulsivity:

  • Poor awareness of danger

  • Difficulty following rules or boundaries

  • Seems unable to stand in lines or wait for their turn in games or group situations

ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF ADHD IN CHILDREN

At Manor Clinic, we are able to offer a multidisciplinary assessment package. This includes an initial assessment by a specialist child psychiatrist to rule out other mental health problems which could cause symptoms similar to ADHD.

Following diagnosis, we offer a range of interventions including psychoeducation about ADHD, behaviour management and parenting advice, individual work with young people, and medication. The choice of treatment will, of course, depend on each child’s particular circumstances, but we would usually start with psychological treatments before going on to medication.

We understand how daunting it can be if you suspect your child might be suffering from ADHD. Here at Manor Clinic, we offer the most up to date treatments in a supportive environment, to enable your child to get back on track and fulfill their potential.
